Matt was born in Gastonia and lived in Gaston County for most of his life. He graduated from Western Carolina University in Aug. of 2003 with a B.S. in Sport Management and a concentration in Exercise Science and Fitness Management. During his time in college, he was very active in the Baptist Student Union. He served as Sport Ministry Chair, President, and upon graduation, he served as Intern to the Campus Minister. During this time he also found himself exploring the thought of full-time ministry. Through much prayer and many different conversations with pastors and mentors it was very clear that God was leading him in that direction.
After his time at Western, Matt attended George W. Truett Theological Seminary on the Campus of Baylor University in Waco, TX. He graduated from Truett in December 2007 with a Master of Divinity degree and a concentration in Youth and Student Ministry, and had several papers and sermons published. During his time at Truett, he learned a great deal about ministry, life, and himself. It became very clear, God wired Matt to communicate with students. Students are where his heart and passions are. While in seminary I worked with all ages of students in various ways including Disciple Now, Worship, etc.
After graduating, Matt served as the Interim Assoc. Pastor for Students at First Baptist Huntersville. This was an overwhelming affirmation of God’s call to work with students. Since then, Matt has served as the Youth Minister at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Huntersville. He has also been serving at Cook’s Presbyterian Church in Charlotte while they searched for a full-time Youth Minister.
Some of Matt’s interests include sports, music, movies, and traveling. When not at church Matt can be found spending time with his daughters, watching them grow and play.
